It was Friday afternoon. As usual I reached the mosque from the office, offered namaz and was waiting for other guys to come back, so that we could start. Beggars at religious places are usual. Whether it be a mosque, a temple or a church, the so called beggars are smart enough to target the soft corners of human being.
The first message which strikes our mind, hearing someone going to a temple or mosque is that, the person concerned needs an eternal bliss. It’s a general assumption and true at times, that people mostly visits a temple or a mosque when he goes through a rough patch.
It is this weakness which the beggars target. I really feel sorry for them but this afternoon I decided never to entertain them anymore in my life.
Since then I had never offered a roadside beggar anything, no matter however do they beg. At times people around, gaze at me and gives look as if I owe them something. I do see people taking pride in offering their useless penny, but it never fascinates me.
Well, it sounds too cruel and ruthless of me. But there’s something which made me ponder on it and reach to the decision of avoiding offering to beggars.
That very Friday a group of six to ten small children, probably all of them less than ten years of age surrounded me. They we dressed like a beggar (I say dressed because they worked for some beggar organization I guess) and pleaded as if they are dying of hunger any moment. Fortunately I had a packet of biscuit in my hand. I preferred to offer them the biscuits, rather than to give out the change which could buy them nothing.
I was taken by surprise, the response I got from one of them and how others followed. “ humen paise chahiye. Khana nahin” Said one of the beggars. I interrogated “What else do you guys do apart from beggary” Pat came the reply “ O malik, dena ho to do nahin to aage badho” My BP raised but I kept my cool not to slap him. I asked again “ agar tum padhte ho to main tumhari madad kar sakta hoon”. And the next moment they ran away as if I had blamed them to be a terrorist.
I kept on wondering and realized soon they might be working for their boss who would punish them if they do not meet their target.
I boarded the cab and sat quietly near the window seat, wondering can we do anything to rectify these malpractices prevailing in our society. Even after 60 years of independence how long we need to keep on hiding our weaknesses. If beggary exists, who is responsible for it? How long do we keep on hiding the beggars, when some international mega events take place in our country? Why do we restrict them from begging only at those times? Why are we ashamed of showing the real India to the world?
Well, I had forgotten that I was a software engineer and my world was restricted inside the beautiful campus of an IT parks, where even a worker takes pride in his job, no matter how much they earn. I wondered why beggars do not target the IT wala’s. I was quick to realize the strict rule and regulation of the vicinity. Still I guessed, we would have contributed much more than what they would accumulate from other places in the city, provided they have a genuine reasons.
India is an incredible country! We do have organization which cares for animals, but we rarely have any prolific organization to take care of the beggars, who are after all, human!. We have organizations which care for extinction of animals. Do we have organizations to make beggary extinct?
Beggary is a crime and the person promoting it is an accomplice!! Many religions disapprove of beggary. The Islamic law justifies this. It's unlawful in the sight of Islam due to divinely law violation. Moreover, it seizes the right of the needy and damages the image of the poor who is a good doer and maintains their dignity by refusing to beg. Muslims all over the world offer zakaat in the month of ramzaan for that very purpose. Millions of money are distributed but still we see them begging. This is where we have failed! It doesn’t make sense to help out all the needy at a time. There’s no point in displaying once generosity. We should aim to help one at a time and show them the right path to earn their living. Such (Beggars) people should be encouraged to earn for their living. No work is small or big unless one is physically and mentally insane. The society and the government should try to come up with organization which could channelize these people and utilize them to earn a living.
Our religion and constitution encourage us for charity. We should contribute our share at places where it can be put to optimum use. Just giving off some money does not end our responsibility of charity. It is our responsibility to ensure that it goes in the right hands.
Government should come up with plans to absorb such people in an organized way, and make them feel that they are not useless creatures. They do not need reservation in administrative posts, what they need is the much needed spark of confidence, that they are capable of surviving in this world. As far as child labour and beggary is concerned, this will automatically bring to an end to it. There are already schools and organizations which offers primary education and meals to the needy students. All we need to do is to ensure that these organizations are run properly.
I want to see a better India. I wish next time, some mega events like CWG games do not compel us to hide beggars from the world which in no way remains hidden, and results for our shame. It is not for the beggars but it is for our sake. We need to treat India as a family rather than a piece of land divided by boundaries.
